CULTIVATING ATTUNEMENT
Build a connection using the individual's interests, notice their body language and sensory cues. Professionals must demonstrate compassion through their actions and words.

HELPING THEM TO IDENTIFY THEIR BOUNDARIES
Boundaries = empowerment. Support them in identifying their individual boundaries and how they can self-advocate.

CO-REGULATION
Provide soothing and nurturing support through a gentle tone of voice, relaxed body language, and individual sensory supports.

    PROXIMITY
Sensory processing differences changes the way Autistic people move, use body posture or how close they like to be in interaction with another. They may need to lean in to process what the person is saying, lean in or on something to feel grounded, or seek distance during heightened anxiety.

DIRECT
Autistic people say what they mean. Efficiency in use of words reduces demands on executive functioning. Trying to talk in 'fluffy' language to avoid being misinterpreted as rude drains cognitive capacity and physical energy. Direct communicators are often mis-labeled as "rude" instead of being straightforward.
    ECHOLALIA
A common characteristic of Autistic communication. Gestalt language acquisition leads to banking of chunks of language which can be used with increasing flexibility. Using stored phrases lowers cognitive processing demands, leading to efficiency in communicating.

Literal
Gestalt cognitive style leads to literal perception and processing of all details. It takes longer to work out the meaning of what was said or read. Ambiguous and vague messages require processing and are more likely to be mis-interpreted or cause confusion or anxiety.
